Who We Are

Unique to Richmond’s vibrant art culture, Shockoe Artspace is a community supported, artist-run, large-scale, non-prof gallery. Founded in 2011, this space has been a labor of love slowly built over the several years leading up to our official launch in January 2016. Our gallery is well situated in a larger shared/mixed-use building providing ample opportunity to both see and exhibit works while guaranteeing a large and diverse audience.

Mission

The mission of SAS is to deeply bolster civic engagement in the creation and understanding of art by providing an enduringly vital platform in Richmond city for a range of student, emerging, and/or professional contemporary artists of exceptional talent from local, regional and international contexts. Through a diverse array of exhibitions, artist talks, forums, and open critiques, we aim to extend the flourishing artistic culture here in Richmond while bolstering the community toward a global discourse surrounding cultural production.

Vision

At the most fundamental level, we believe in supporting growth in the artist, while increasing interest and appreciation from patrons and supporters alike.

Submission

Artist submissions are welcomed. Submissions will be reviewed several times a year. If upon review, we have further interest, we will be in touch with you directly. Artists should include a C.V., and artist statement, along with a personal web address and or 5 to 10 jpeg images with captions. Submissions must be emailed to submissions@shockoeartspace.com.
